The Not A Pretty Girl Project is a feminist art movement, named after the song by musician – but not affiliated with - Ani DiFranco, revolving around women and their stories, ranging from love and heartbreak, abuse in any form, body image, sex/sexuality, assault, rape, and other topics that fall under the umbrella of women's issues - including our stories of success and empowerment. Women who decide to participate in this project will be interviewed on camera by myself and my production partner, Danielle Johnson, starting September 2014, or via webcam for women not in California. The material recorded in the interviews will then be interpreted through a collection of creative writing pieces, that will later be released on to the website under the Not A Pretty Girl Project tab. Some of the footage recorded by Danielle will later be complied into a documentary, which would also be released here on the website, on YouTube, and entered in various film festivals. (participation in film optional).
What’s different about Not A Pretty Girl Project is that it’s not just a documentary and it’s not just focused on one particular issue that can victimize us. It’s a full on art movement that is about women – including transgender women. It shows women in all our struggle and empowerment, our success and our failures, and our strength and vulnerability. We are not one-dimensional beings and this movement aims to show us in all our colors. This movement is defiant to the destructive powers of misogyny, it is “in your face” to systematic sexism and the members of the senate who voted “No” on the Paycheck Fairness Act. It is a way to show the sexist system that our voices will be heard and are not going away until violence against women stops, our bodies are no longer objectified in the media, we can have agency over our own sexuality without being demeaned, and until equality is reached.
